puente news

People keep asking me how the fund raising is going. Very well thank you very much! Right now we are more than half way to our goal of $228,000. At last check after Easter we were at about $117,000. And this does not include the generous gift of the Mueller’s of waiving our rent! So if you include that we are about at about $132,000. These are tough times to be asking over and above giving. But we are thankful for every cent we get.

This morning the Herald had a full front pager on Puente in the Neighborhood section of the paper. How cool is this…  http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=289194&src=2

But what is even cooler is the awesome video feature they created for the website. Not to keen on the extreme close up of my mug but Paul Michna really did a terrific job! Paul took the photo’s, wrote the article and did the video piece from shoot to edit. Impressive!

week one - nearly completed

Well the first week is nearly done in the After School program. And it has been a great week. Each day has been a little smoother than the previous day. The kids are eager, and the volunteers have been having fun. Next week their are just two days of school and then a break. A time for volunteers and Lilia to catch their breath.

This Sunday we are having an open house 1pm-4pm at the Puente Offices. Should be lot's of fun.

puente del peublo pre-launch countdown

Tomorrow is the big day. Puente del Pueblo launches its After School program. We have already filled one classroom with 15 kids. It would seem we should easily fill another classroom soon. We are praying for a 2nd teacher to come alongside of us. We are all so excited. I am proud of the team. They have worked hard to make all of this happen. The last 14 days have been hectic. Tomorrow I will post some pictures of the first day.

solid day at puente del pueblo

On Saturday we had about a dozen or so people stop by to put the finishing touches on Puente. We finished the baseboards, deep cleaned places that might not have been cleaned in a couple of decades, and finished painting the ceilings. It looks like a professional, homey, warm place to come. Our team is going to love it.

puente part tres

Here is part one, part two.

The Plan

The plan is simple. The biggest need in the apartment complex is to extend the school day for children living in the complex. The Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) is meeting meeting part of this need. They have a great drop in place for kids to be at after school. They have capacity for about 40 kids at any one time with about 60 kids in total visiting on a regular basis. This is maybe 20% of the kids living in Westwood. They also serve about 350 adults per year with various services and programs some of which they run and some of which are run by outside partners.

This is why we are renting two apartments inside of Westwood. This will give us about 1500 sq. ft. of space. We will use this space for our casework offices. The space will also be used for different "workshops". Parenting, job skills, budgeting, health etc...

We learned pretty quick that we can't help the kids without also helping their whole family. This is why we have hired a part time and full time case manager who will be working inside of our offices at Westwood. We believe this will not only help students who are in our after school program, but will also be a place for NRC and WEGO referrals. Eventually it will be opened up to referrals to other churches. We will have to wait to see what our capacity is after the first year.

So. #1 We are going to be offering an after school program to Westwood kids (and if capacity to non-Westwood kids) starting in few weeks. We are hiring a full time teacher, and two part time teachers to do this.

#2 Case management and workshops inside of the complex itself. I want to add that we had looked for some space to do our case management around the complex, even looking as far away as downtown WEGO (about 5 miles) but did not feel like a good fit for us. We wanted to go big and small at the same time. In other words we wanted to stay focused on one community. Westwood. We wanted to stay close to our church campus. Westwood is just three miles away. We wanted to shoot for transformation. It will be easier to gage how we are doing with this in a definable community like an apartment complex. It made sense to simply focus on Westwood for the pilot program. And this is pilot. Yes we are committed to years of ministry, but there are no guarantees. We have bigger plans, much bigger but we are in this for a long time so we will move ahead confidently.

#3 We want to be "the welcome wagon" to the complex. We hope to be developing a visitation program with the complex management. We will visit all new tenants on behalf of the management, WEGO, the NRC and Puente. We want people to feel welcomed, and to let them know where they can go for help if it is needed.

#4 Because we believe in Jesus and his Church we will be bussing people to church on Sunday mornings. That will start in a month or so.

#5 In year three we want to start a summer day program as well as a scholarship program for teens.

#6 Puente is sort of a lab. We want to create and environment where people can use their gifts to start new ministries. The sky is the limit! We have lots of good ideas and already have one solid written proposal in our hands! We have two more ideas from committed volunteers in the area of health care and legal services which are big needs. Can't wait to see where that leads. Did I mention we already have 100 volunteers in process of getting applications turned in and processed?

By the way since my first post on this we modified the name. It is now Puente del Pueblo not El Puente del Pueblo. We wanted puente to be a very and not a known.

el puente - part two - the listening tour

image Wheaton Bible Church has not had much of a presence in West Chicago... until CareFest. The first CareFest we served at one school in WEGO. The principal of Pioneer attends WBC. I asked her if we could serve her school by doing some cleaning, landscaping and painting. Being a heavily Hispanic school ( I think it is over 80%) it was a great choice for us. It was an awesome day and we immediately realized the schools are key to the building bridges into the community. In the Spring of 2006 we served at ever single school in West Chicago. The same in 2007. In 2008 we not only served outside the schools, we totally remodeled two teachers lounges, and painted an entire gym.

Of course today we have a very large presence in WEGO. Not just because of CareFest but because of the new building being located in WEGO! Buildings alone don't give us presence, but over time the building will represent the people who worship inside of it! The church, which is people gives presence!

Because of CareFest, when we called some the school district leaders to talk they were more than happy to sit down with us. We had no idea in 2005 that El Puente was only three years away! But God knew!

Our first meeting was with a police commander, the school district superintendent, and one or two social workers from the high school. We just listened. What are the needs? How might you imagine us helping?

We met with pastors, community leaders and finally met someone who needed some help. Lulu has been working for the WEGO police department in the resource centers for a number of years. She runs three resource centers in three apartment complexes on a shoestring budget. The largest center is in the largest complex in WEGO and just three miles from the new campus.

We took time to listen to Lulu and her needs. The tops needs in WEGO? After school care, extending the school day for kids, help for parents, legal help especially with immigration and mental health issues. It is stressful to move to the U.S. and try to raise your kids!

We quickly decided this was the place. Lulu does not have enough space to meet the needs of the hundreds of kids in the complex. She is under resourced. We can help her. She needs case workers to help do assessments, and their needs to be more space for kids. What if we started by helping with after school care and provided some case workers?

The question is how do we do this? Where do we do this? When do we do this? Who is going to do this?

Obviously $100,000 is not going to go far! How can we extend the money to last us longer? How can our program be sustainable?

Tomorrow, part three - the plan.

el puente - part 1

image The biggest reason for my lack of blogging is just the shear busyness this past summer. I already regret not documenting more about the move into the new building. There was so much happening the last 45 days or so. It is a blur.

I had to move out my office on June 29th which is about about two weeks before the rest of the staff move. July was really an exciting month. But the most exciting month of the summer is going to be September for sure. (Technically September is mostly a summer month.)

I am so stoked to be finally talking about El Puente. We announced the project at our staff meeting last week. At least I tried between tears! We will be announcing to the congregation on August 24th, but for the three of you who read my blog you get some advance "insider" deets. Oooooh.

Where to start....

Last year our local impact ministry was given $100,000 by someone or some group as seed money to do something. Whatever we wanted. Hanibal Rodriguez and I had been talking about doing something big in West Chicago since we started sharing and office last Fall. "Wouldn't it be cool to have some sort of ministry center in West Chicago?", we would ask ourselves. We never imagined it would happen in less than a year!

Our first phone call after hearing about the money was to Chris Ellerman at Outreach Community Ministries. OCM was actually started by WBC and some other churches about 30 years ago. I find it interesting that people are shocked by that. A ministry to the poor, in the suburbs, 30 years ago? Un. Heard. Of. But it is true. Ridge Burns, former high school pastor of WBC started taking kids to this large underesourced collection of apartments in South Carol Stream to put on a "Sidewalk Sunday School". It went from that, to them renting some apartments for ministry to what is today OCM. Yes it took years for that to happen. Chris Elleman was the graduate student from Wheaton College hired to to be first leader of this new ministry. Today he is the CEO of this amazing ministry. And he is a huge resource to us. We asked Chris to help us to avoid the landmines he stepped in throughout the years. And so far we have done that. We think!

Chris immediately began by telling us we needed to meet as many people as we could. We needed to go on a listening tour.

Part two tomorrow!
